One important thing to keep in mind is that some companies take this approach of operating in a level above too far, effectively taking advantage of a person that delivers more than gets in return. It is important to be aware of when people are doing this for too long.

And yes, you are totally right. There is a big difference between helping people stretch to the next level and then rewarding them with promotion versus stringing people along and having them do a bigger job for a long time with no reward.

Managers should use these techniques with sincerity.
